Lower Dularge East D-19 Pump Station Floodwall

Lower Dularge is a community in south Terrebonne Parish that rests outside of the existing Morganza to the Gulf (MTG) flood inundation reduction system. However, the Terrebonne Levee and Conservation District (TLCD) has included this community for protection from surges associated with tropical events and hurricanes. The protection consists of several miles of levee that tie into the MTG system and a floodgate at the end of the system. Storm water pumping stations are utilized to remove storm water from the interior of the system that keep the residents in this area from flooding. The D-19 pump station located on the eastern side of Bayou Dularge is an integral part of this system. The TLCD has plans to increase the level of flood protection for the lower Dularge system. Modifications to the D-19 pump station were required in order to increase the level of protection at this location.

DCC assisted the TLCD in preparing plans, specifications, bidding of the project and managing construction of the improvements to the pump station to provide an increase in flood protection. Due to the water depths on the flood side of the levee and the close proximity of a private boat launch and boat house, the relocation of the levee section at this location was not possible. DCC planned, analyzed and designed a steel sheet pile floodwall at this location that would allow the pump station to remain in its current location but allow the pumps to discharge the water through the new floodwall. This was accomplished with a structural insert in the floodwall with in-line check valves to prevent backflow into the system during high water events but still allow the pumps to discharge the water during these events. The floodwall is constructed from steel sheet pile and is supported by 100 plus foot long battered steel pipe piles. The floodwall provides protection for the pump station and the surrounding community to a +13.0’ elevation.
