Island Road Fishing Piers and Parking Lots

The Pointe-aux-Chenes Wildlife Management Area is owned and operated by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. It includes over 35,000 acres of publicly accessible land and waterways that span across Terrebonne and Lafourche Parishes. The objectives of this area are not only conservation and management of wildlife resources but also provide opportunities for scientific research, environmental education, and wildlife-oriented recreation, including fishing, hunting, trapping, camping, bird watching, and nature photography.

The management area is located approximately 15 miles south each of Houma, La. in southern Terrebonne and Lafourche Parishes. Island Road which is the southern-most boundary of the management unit in Terrebonne Parish is a popular roadside fishing destination particularly around the water control structure. Conditions along this stretch of road are unsafe due to the narrow road and minimal shoulder.

This project is to construct five small parking lots with fishing piers along the north side of Island Road. This would greatly improve the safety of recreational users by reducing the hazards created by vehicles parked along the roadway. Each parking area is designed to accommodate up to 11 vehicles and is handicapped accessible. Each parking area will also have 2-piers which are 8-foot wide and 56-feet long in order to accommodate the numerous recreational users.

This project would also renovate an existing boat launch located on Island Road in order to improve public user access. The renovations would include not only a new vinyl sheet pile bulkhead which surrounds the boat launch but also a new concrete boat launch, new boat docks, updated parking lot lighting and to dredge out a silted-in access canal for better access to the boat launch. The material from dredging out this canal will be beneficially used to construct marsh terraces. These improvements should make the Pointe-aux-Chenes Wildlife Management Area an even more popular recreational fishing, hunting and wildlife-oriented destination.
